Choosing the right DJ for your Wedding...

We are all different, and every wedding is different… but the one thing that we should all agree on is that we want guests to enjoy a wedding, and better still tell you what a great time they've had!

You could spend thousands of pounds choosing the right venue, finding a stunning dress, ensuring the food is delicious, selecting stunning floral creations, but unless you do the same with you entertainment, you could end up with your reception being a beautifully decorated, stunning looking flop!

They say that the average wedding in the UK costs around £18,000… whether that's accurate or not, it will certainly run into the thousands. An enormous expense to consider for anyone, and quite often the entertainment seems to be thought about towards the end of the wedding planning process. Mind you, I have bookings in my diary over 18 months away, and these seem to be the couples who have a very clear idea about the entertainment and the importance of it!

There are so many different styles of DJ, types of equipment & prices it can be complicated, but it really doesn't need to be. You may already know a great DJ who is a friend and therefore are guaranteed to be in good hands, however, if you don't I'd suggest taking your time to find the right one for you! Unfortunately, it's not like buying a product off the shelf where you can compare prices from store to store for the same product, each DJ has his own personality, different equipment (which can be expensive or lower priced) and a different appearance or experience.

There are a number of DJ companies / Agencies who will ensure that your DJ is smartly dressed, insured, licenced & PAT tested. Some offer playlist consultations, online music/playlist planning tools & guest request logins to help you make your night even better. There are also independent DJ's who do the same, and do it very well. But there are also others who won't always offer all of these tools & services, their appearance & equipment may not be as sharp, but their price will probably better than the other guys… (I would suggest the price is better because their kit is lower priced to purchase, and they don't offer the same services.

When you find a DJ you like, you should ask the following questions:

  1. Do you carry Public Liability Insurance?
  2. Is all of your equipment PAT (electrical safety) tested?
  3. Are you a member of any trade organisations? (SEDA, NADJ, DJ MARK)
  4. Do you offer consultations, take requests or allow playlists to be provided?
  5. How does the equipment look, and how will you be dressed?
  6. Do you have an equipment / DJ back up plan (in case of emergency)?

The DJ's who invest in their equipment will be able to tell you all about why it's better than their competitor, in fact, they'll probably be delighted to do so… (be warned, you could be there a while) it's usually a good sign if a DJ can offer you brand names, some of the best are Denon, Martin, Electro-Voice, Bose. If you ask a DJ how their equipment compares to an alternative suppliers package, I'm sure they will explain the differences. At the end of the day, you want to give them the opportunity to talk, so that you can decide if you'd like them or their company to look after your wedding entertainment.
